Who We Are
The Maud Powell String Institute is a nonprofit string preparatory program for ages 4-18 based in Novato, CA. MPSI‘s mission is to provide highly accessible and high-quality music education to immigrant and underserved communities in the Bay Area. We provide full and partial need-based scholarships and all the equipment, including the instruments. We encourage the finest quality training from an early age through using the most effective pedagogical methods to ensure the long-term success of our students while fostering a collaborative environment. We are here to make a difference in our community!
Our vision is to make classical music more accessible and approachable amongst wider audiences by breaking down pre-existing barriers to learning, such as high costs, outdated curriculum, pre-requisites to enter classical music programs, and historically excluding minorities. Our programming provides an outlet for families who might not otherwise consider music as an option because either they can’t afford it or it is just outside their reach. Additionally, our curriculum is innovative and combines traditional Western Classical Music practices with elements from other pre-existing cultures and traditions, such as learning cultural songs from around the world and incorporating elements of different styles of music. This creates a more welcoming and far less-exclusive environment for our students to grow and create music, and it helps build a deeper appreciation for classical music and its benefits.
Here at the Maud Powell String Institute, we are fully invested in all our students’ success. As such, the quality of the training we provide is an absolute priority. Our faculty’s teaching methods have a track record for excellence, and their effectiveness has been proven over and over again over time. All our teachers undergo a special training on best practices for teaching stringed instruments to children, most effective teaching methods for best results and the curriculum. At MPSI, we strongly believe that developing solid technical foundation is crucial in every child’s development and plays a major role in their ability to play music and perform. Having strong fundamentals can then enable each student to grow musically, and discover their own voice. We look forward to having you at our school!
